Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) research

12/14/2010 12:43 AM

We are considering purchasing a GPR for evaluating underground geological changes and anomolies in 3d feedback processed through a field computer you carry with you and the transciever. Specifically locating gold is our primary target. Anyone have insite to the various mfgs and the type of units being offered, recommended software? We would also like to be able to distinquish different types of minerals and rocks such as quartz, feldspar, granite etc.... Quite often clay from inches to many feet will be covering the nuggets or pockets. We are trying to seperate science from sales!!! Is this current technolgy available?

I am pretty sure that GPR will not be able to distinguish different minerals and clay soils have high radar losses because of their molecular ionic structure. In wet clay soils it is often impossible for a GPR to penetrate.

There are scientists as well as salespeople at MALA and sure someone would be able to help you further. http://www.malags.com/Innovation/GPR-Explained

Thank you for the lead. We visited Mala website and studied for a bit and then sent and inquiry.

GPR can't really do what you want. To do this, the device would have to be able to transmit/bounce a wavelength through the soil. It would then have to process the results of the reflected beams. It would have to know the SG/reflectivity of every material in the ground, so that it could differentiate. It then would also need to be able to judge how long it took the beam to bounce back so that it could give an approximate depth of the different mineral deposits. If there is such a device, mining/oil/gas companies would pay big money for it. They could cut their test drilling drastically.

As a practicing mineralogist I can tell you that no GPR will tell you the difference between minerals, in fact GPR will not work properly in wet clay and some soils!

Mala systems can find gold anywhere....call them and ask them. Don't take no for an answer.

Try visiting GeoView's page on GPR - they might be able to help and have locations everywhere.
