12/16/2010 10:27 AM

Dear Gurus ,

How can i strongly stick silicone rubber on a piece of metal without using any glue.

Looking for some kind of transparent non residue type of primer which can be applied

on the metal piece.

Any suggestion..welcome

Is this a cured sheet or a two part system that you will mix and apply or is it a single part system that you squeeze out of a tube.

Can't give you an answer till we know.

If it's two part, mix and pour, the supplier will have a transparent primer you can use.

Wouldn't such a "primer" be just another word for "glue"?

Maybe there is a way to heat the metal part so that the rubber melts, "vulcanizing" itself to the metal.

That's why I asked my questions. Once cured, silicone rubber does not soften with heat. There are primers for two part RTVs, such as those used in mold making, that allow you to directly cast the uncured rubber onto a metal plate.

Well this is a brain teaser.

No glue.

No residue.

And we have to be nice..................I'll have to get back to you.

When installing glass windows in a large flume using RTV silicone I applied an orange colored primer on the glass to ensure no leaks. I got it from the RTV dealer. Is your silicone rubber clear? If you are mounting it on metal, transparency should not matter.

I'm back.

Assuming that you're talking about cured silicone rubber, the best way to stick it to metal is with silicone rubber, it comes in clear and is in a caulking tube.

Scratch up the mating surface of your cured silicone rubber. Apply a bead of silicone rubber caulking to your metal surface. Clamp and let set for at least 24 hours.

This will give you the best set.

If you want to experiment, the melting point of silicone rubber is 932°F

Maybe you can heat the metal to this temp and get it to grab, I don't know if this will work or not.
