Brown & Sharpe Digit Cal II Battery Access and Button Functions

12/16/2010 3:13 PM

I inherited a digital caliper, a Brown & Sharpe Digit Cal II.

The battery is dead. Apparently it uses a CR 2032 battery. I assume I pry the black cover off the back of the 'head' to find the battery, but I thought I'd ask for sage advice before prying. (I perused the B&S site, but this model is not mentioned).

1) Any advice on accessing the battery?

Button functionality:

2) the O is on/off?

3) M toggels metric or inch?

4) U is ?

5) C is ? Calibrate to zero?

You'll be moth-balling that precision Westcott device soon, then .

I suspect the M button switches the mode for SPC work. I suspect the U switches units. Could you post a pic of the back or of the l/r sides of the head? we might be able to figure out how to access the battery if we had a better view.

And of course you know you can buy a cheap chinese knockoff for under 20 bucks here.

That 2032 is a big sucker as far as the little lithiums go. Actually about the size of a nickel. Might help to figure out access. I just put one in my truck door lock pendant the other day.

for Lithium coin cells the number tells the size, the first two digits is the diameter in whole millimeters, and the third and fourth digit is the single decimal place thickness in millimeters, so for example a CR2032 would be 20 mm dia, and 3.2 mm thick.

I replaced the battery in one similar a while back; recall it was rather easy, like maybe the plastic face popped off. Believe it used a typical small watch battery.

With Bill ML's encouragement, I got brave, stuck a screwdriver blade into the gap between the black plastic housing and the caliper

and the battery cover popped right off.

The battery label:

The 3 batteries housed in the cover, which are triple 625A's, not a CR2032

Glad that worked out for you!

Looks like a replacement would be an SR41W. Check it out for yourself: http://www.batteryguys.com/cross_reference.php

Look up the physical dimensions and voltage to confirm (elsewhere/Google).

Looks like 4-each cells.

Don't see my earlier 2nd post. A cross reference (from memory) replacement is SR41SW, also type 384. Check/verify the physical and voltage before you buy! I can't find the site that I'd found before. But this one might work for you: http://swatchbattery.com/crossreference.html

If you have a Batteries Plus local, it's a good resource.

A GA anyone?

My link above about LiIon battery sizes also has a cross reference for silver and alkaline button cells.
