Southern Folger is a company I deal with. Manufacturers of detention equipment, including sliding vehicle gates. If long life under hard use is a requirement, these guys can build one for you.

They have an international distribution network.

I have assumed you are making some sort of custom gate for vehicle traffic control, and wish to automate these gates for convenience and security. Is this correct?

You are really not telling us too much. Interior/exterior? Hydraulic/electric? Comply with codes of what locality? Cantilever, overhead slide, or other? Auto-reverse? If yes, which system? Is the gate system to resist an impact (in other words, it will withstand an attempted ramming by a car)?

Armed with this (and more) information, you can approach the manufacturer I suggested and they will provide only the parts you need. Be advised they are an industrial manufacturer. Their products are heavy duty, and are priced accordingly.

In the case all of this is too much to consider, I Google searched sliding gate operator europe and got about 203,000 hits. There must be someone in the world that will sell you something.

If the gate travel is less than about 7 feet, and if it is mounted on wheels, you could get an el cheapo garage door opener to do this. However, it would be nice to know how big the gate is, whether it moves horizontally or vertically, and how fast it must open/close.

In our country, gate operators are 50 to 80 kg range. In your case, you have to employ 10 people of 100kg.

The gate might weigh 1500 kg (or whatever), but it would take only a few kg to accelerate it horizontally.

I've used a Centurion sliding gate opener for decades now. They have a European presence as well: look at http://www.centsys.co.za/?q=cdistributors

I use the D3 for my residence, but I know that at work we bought a heavier duty version some time ago for a heavy gate with many operations per day. They seem to handle lightning fairly well too (or it could be a good installation by the electrician!), and most are 12V DC versions with built-in battery back-up, remote controlled, optional optical sensors, etc. A good installation by a reputable supplier is essential, especially if you have a 1000kg gate!

Hope it helps.
