Change in Motor Rotation

12/19/2010 4:14 AM

Hi friends, I have a problem in a 3phase ac motor from ABB which is controlled by ABB drive..the motor runs in clockwise direction..now the problem is that when i am giving the start command to motor it first runs in anticlock wise direction for 2-3 seconds and then again changing its direction in clockwise direction.

can any one tell me why the motor is behaving this way ? and advice me to overcome this problem..

mention some more details like motor KW, contactors between drive and motor and information like it is new installed drive and motor or after some repair behaving like that

Kramaret, I gave you a GA on this. Like others who have posted, it has nothing to do with motor KW, HP, function. Bottom line is a programming issue only. This is all it is.

ABB and I'll throw SQD in here as well, their programming is ludicris. All my drives are Emerson Control Techniques. They are simple to setup, program and they have 4 presets built in that are easily managable and I use all of them. Plus it has all the communications anyone would ever want. Yes this may be off topic, but finding a simple but complex drive that works is a god send. I sold AB Drives for 20 years. In 2005, I had to go back to the field of design and fabrication. Life is so much happier since.

Sounds like you've got the 'Speed Search' function switched ON.

This commonly sends a small voltage at different frequencies in reverse before forward to estimate existing speed of the motor. This develops very little torque, not normally enough to move a motor much, I suppose you have no load and / or the ABB function is too aggressive?

Of course, it's finding no agreement in reverse, starts forward, finds the speed (at zero) then accelerates.

Switch the function off should cure this problem.

What's your application?

What motor size and drive is it?

Describe the motion and what's the motor current in reverse?

Too little information in your post, I'm afraid, to give a more precise possible cause.

Good luck, hope this may help.

I faced same problem as you are.My motor-pump was intended to pump the fuel from Tank to truck loading gantry and its capacity nearly 2500L/m,12 KW.It's starting rotation was ok but within a minutes it was going to wrong rotation,Finally We found there is a problem of check valve,After maintenance check valve it was ok.I dont know about your pump, specially field of application.Even something else,I dont have solution.

More detail needed. Is there a brake on this motor? Is the motor actually turning in reverse from an applied voltage or is the device you are trying to drive causing the rotation when the brake (if it has one) is released?

I like your joke buddy! You wouls trying to pull my leg! Right! Perhaps there is a secret switch in there that re-switches from one direction to another?
