For the unsophisticated, such as myself:

"Boxing Day is so called because on this day it was the customary for tradesmen to collect their Christmas boxes or gifts in return for good service ...

http://homepages.tesco.net/~derek.berger/holidays/boxingday.html"

Good for you. Now go do something fun.

Tony, welcome to the ranks of old know-it-alls. Now I will try and demonstrate this attribute.

There are several different versions as to why it is called boxing day.

The Gentry up at the manor would have the leftovers from their Christmas dinner put into small boxes and given to the estate workers.

It was, as you say, that tradesmen came for their Christmas "boxes".

It was a big sporting day, including prize fights that were labelled as boxing matches because prize fighting was illegal. So it became boxing day.

I tend to think that "boxes" came from the first above and became a name for presents for servants and tradesmen.

ps. I used to go to the Royal Oak on occasion.

Congratulations, TonyS, you earned it. Retirement is great, you can pursue your hobbies and rest without feeling guilty.

As we retirees step aside, new workers can find employment. I do what I can to steer good workers to good jobs.

Congrats... Now... you will wonder how you ever had time to do what you did before, or so I have been told. Still 4-5 years to go for me. Looking forward to it.

On another subject... Wikipedia said that Boxing Day is not a holiday in the US. Is that the case?

Congratulations! Now tell me - at what age do you officially become an old fart? I think most standards would include me in that group for some time now...

Pity, after retirement, I'm forced to be more busy (or stressed?) since lost that best excuse...

On the "Lumberjack" theme, do it if you want. I tried it and decided it was an easy way to get dead. I came awfully close to being run over by a log rolling down a hill.

Hi Tony,

Good health and best wishes on your retirement.

I retire this year and plan to continue to watch some local cricket in the Summer, Edwinstowe's ground is particularly attractive. May continue umpiring on Sundays - weather permitting!
