Cleaning Ideas Needed for Water Tube Boiler

03/26/2007 8:17 AM

Is there any easy method to clean the carbon soot (hard layer) from the super heater tubes of water tube boiler using Furnace oil as a fuel and the boiler used for power generation purpose (capacity 700 ton per hr)?

thanks

1. dry tubes out thoroughly

2. fill with Castrol decarboniser ( i think it is Triclorethelyene) leave for about 12 hours.

3. drain and refill with water

4. inject high pressure air or preferably nitrogen, in low end with top end open.

5. wash through with water

That should clean it off. collect the effluent as the decarboniser is toxic via the skin.

I presume the hard carbon layer is on the outer surface of water-tubes. This side is exposed to furnace oil flame and formation of soot is quite common due to incomplete combustion.

I feel chemical cleaning would be a effective solution.

Why not try out on-line techniques like dozing with "Polarchem L2"? See website www.polarchem.com

Hi Amjadli,

You do not say where you are BUT PLEASE DO NOT use triclo...as it has been restricted for use because of what it does to the enviro..YES it works..but the dammage it does is not worth.and the staff you have will have to dress like space man..The stuff from polarchem looks better. Now if you were in africa I would recomend carbon cleaner made in South Afica.

many thanks

In the case of a railway steam locomotive, it was common practice when the engine was working hard for the fireman to take a shovelful of dry sand out of the sand-box and to throw it into the firebox. The draft pulled the sand through the tubes and the exhaust blast blew both it and the entrained soot out the chimney.

Not recommended for a Monday morning when all that washing was out drying on the line in the gardens by the lineside.

How times have changed...

I think you will need to install a soot blower system if you haven´t.

This website can help you http://www.diamondpower.com/DP/Framesets/ProductSet.html

I feel Ernesto has good insticts.

I agree with him about a soot blower which is foremost requirement if its not there. If its there and yet not being used, it should be immediately put back in service before trying out wilder ideas like sand blasting inside water-tube boilers.

Thanks Mr. Ernesto.

Actually I m just talking about the cleaning during shutdown not operation, as 8 Nos. Soot blowers are installed per boiler and are operated daily for soot blowing.

during shut down soot (carbon) is some what easy to clean but if it keeps unclean it react with outside are moisture and sticky carbon is built which is very harmful for material and also difficult to clean.

hope u understand now better..

thanks

Since you are from Pakistan, I'll suggest you contact Mr.Suhail Hussain of Gresham's who manufacturers high pressure water tube boilers and will help you out.
