My 9 year old 17" CRT had similar problems. I discarded it and found a 19" HP LCD (4:3, used, in nearly perfect condition) at a local computer recycler for just under $40. Local repair shops around here won't even "look" at an item for $40. You should check for computer recyclers in your area. You might be pleasantly surprised.

If the clicking sounds only lasts for a few seconds, it is probably due to the de-gaussing circuitry, which pulses a coil near the screen to eliminate any residual magnetism in the shadow-mask that would cause color impurities in the picture.

If it's taking 25 minutes for the picture to appear there is a problem with the CRT filament or the circuitry that drives the filament. If there is a TV repair shop anywhere near you, they might be able to test it/fix it. You could try adjusting the black level setting ('brightness level') if there is a knob-adjustment or menu selection for it; otherwise there might be an potentiometer adjustment for it on the high voltage power supply which would likely require that you open the chassis in order to gain access to it.

Either:

1. Leave it on all the time

2. Pitch it in the recycle bin and buy a new monitor.

3. You can't get it repaired anyway. It's too old.

4. Pitch it in the recycle bin and buy a new monitor.
