Cable Schedule

01/04/2011 1:02 PM

Does anyone have an example of a cable schedule? I am working on a new project, have not been in the job for more then 2 days and they are throwing so much at me to walk through blind. Thank you.

Please provide more info.

1. I am assuming this is electrical. ( I have very little practical knowledge for this type of question.

2. What standards are you designing to?

3. How much load the cable is suppose to carry?

4. Are there any size constraints?

5. Are there any cost constraints?

Like you, we find it hard to work "Blind".

Ask for training.

Training is the encouragement of the desired behaviour.

Cable schedule???

If you are looking for an ampacity schedule try this:

http://wiki.xtronics.com/index.php/Wire-Gauge_Ampacity

BUT verify this information with your local AHJ (authority having jurisdiction) before starting the install.

Are you being asked to produce cable schedules or confirm adherence to them?

Re: Cable Schedule

Back in the day (when I was doing engineering work) a cable schedule was a list of all the cables on a project that had to be routed somehow. Usually there was an accompanying raceway schedule, to show what raceways (conduit, cable tray, ...) had to be installed between specific locations. The raceways (as well as the cables) are assigned project specific numbers (that are also useful after the project for maintenance).

It was a job of one of the electrical designers / draftsman to specify raceways and cables to be routed between parts of the project. There would typically be physical drawings showing the routing (drawn on backgrounds from the structural / mechanical designers). But the other "tool" for installation of the raceways and cables were the raceway schedules (which specified the number, size, and type of each raceway between locations) and the cable schedules (which showed the number of cables, size, type, ..., and which raceways they were routed through to get to their destination.

These drawings--the physicals plus the raceway schedule plus the cable schedule told the electrical installer what they had to run in the way of raceways and cables.

I would expect that any engineering firm has examples (and probably standards) for raceway and cable schedules. (Oh, and on some of the last jobs I worked on, the 24x36" drawings showing raceway and cable schedules were replaced by 8 1/2 by 11 computer printouts.)

Dating yourself,aren't you.

Very seldom do I see anything printed out above 11 x 17

kwoznia1,

My mistake misreading your post. Now we see why I have to view 24" X 36" drawings

I do not have an example of a "cable schedule" but I do have an example of an "equipment schedule" that INCUDES a cable schedule.

This will probably come out un-readable but if you PM me with your e-mail addy, I will send you a readable copy.

Large A0 drawings are a lot easier than swapping between 9 A4's

Re: Cable Schedule

Cable schedule is a type of spreadsheet containing each and every cable for the project. It maintains lot of cable information such as Cable Tag Number, Cable Type, Number of Conductors, Cable Size, Voltage, From Equipment, Gland Type at From End, To Equipment, Gland Type at To End, Total Length, Routing Drawing, Comments etc. It is generally (not necessarily) prepared using the Excel spreadsheet.

I would suggest you to seek some of your colleagues or friends to find an existing template for the cable schedule and start from there.

In a MS excel work sheet enter the list of cables, insulation, armoured or not, from,to, size, in conduit/tray/surface etc. Get a draughtsperson to give lengths by measuring from the drawings

Hello, I am sure that you are working in down stream project, noticed from the name you have called " cable schedule". Don't be confuse, it's just a cable list which listed all the cable from Electrical drawing to Pull the cables in correct routing. The following items are to be listed, CABLE TAG NUMBER, TYPE, SIZE, EQUIPMENT TAG(FROM), EQUIPMENT LOCATION(FROM), CABLE TRAY TAGS(IF REQUIRED), EQUIPMENT TAG(TO), EQUIPMENT LOCATION(TO), CALCULATED LENGTH, ACTUAL LENGTH, DRAWING NUMBER/REVISION.

Re: Cable Schedule

Cable schedules and cable test schedules are synonymous with each other in my case, we use them to refer to all cabling and their distribution throughout an environment, including all relative devices, machinery, etc.

I currently use cable schedules in the IT industry to verify all known network cabling, type, distribution, connections, and all associated network devices including infrastructure such as patch panels, wall mount plates, hubs, switches, and ANYTHING related.

I can only ASSUME that it is similar in most industries, whether electrical or Information Technologies, where we need to develop a cohesive "map" of all known elements and pathways of possible problems with all factors in any given environment.

When we have all the necessary data, we can now complete a "Cable Test Schedule" so we can test all connections and wiring for faults, swapped pairs, shorts, BERT tests, you name it.

Then I can "certify" any line in any network for the problems I just mentioned and most of all in networks, SPEED.

Just remember that you need to know this information if you need to troubleshoot any aspect of your environment.
