Arrangement of Lightning Protection on the Top of a Building?

01/04/2011 3:58 PM

330 Rft high rise building comprising of two towers .lightening protection system is to be installed .Both towers have height difference of 10-15 feet .The Lightening arrestor height is maximum 5 Meter ,this lightening arrestor is connected to earthing down conductor and grounded in basement with complete earthing mesh with rod type earth pits . Now as per architect design/aesthetic requirement they want to install metallic telecom antenna 3 Nos. on top of the high rise building which height will be greater than lightening arrestor . My question is ,how these antennas should be connected with existing lightening arrestors/protection system ,keeping in mind the height effect of lightening .

I do not believe that this, or any, internet forum should provide free consultation on systems which consequences that can be lethal.

I also believe that no ethical person would solicit such advice from total strangers.

You should hire a competant local engineer.

Your subject title is about lightning and question is all about lightening. Whatever, you can connect the antenna with lightning protection conductor.

The building towers readily have a lightning protection design, the three telecom towers are metallic structures just connect those with the existing conductors at the roof of the building.

It is a case of extension of the existing lightning protection. Keep the route length short and avoid bends at all costs.

I think that the top of the lightening arrestor should be the highest metal structure on the top of the building in order to be the nearest metal structure which can receive or discharge the lightening stroke . I recommend to consult any local specialized company to check your case and propose to you the optimum solution .

Dear Mr.Khan,

Similar questions were already answered in this forum. If you are in India please refer & follow National Building Code ( NBC) 2007 . (1) Refer to Part 8 Section 2 Para 11 to 11.1.8 to decide whether your area needs any Advanced

Streamer Emissoion type Arresters (2) decide whether you want Collection Bowl type

or Inverted type of protection. Depending uopn the Lightning Arrester Mast height the

area of protection will change. Your 3 antennas Should not be connected to the

LA system because any lightining Voltage will affect the antennas & the systems

connected to it. It is true that tha antennas will attract the lightning strike first

but the coverage area offered by the Advanced Streamer Emission may give

protection .

Dear Rhkramer Good point referred ,here in this case Erico Dynasphere is approved by consultant instead Eearly streamer emission(ESE). What are ur comments then ....

I would ask the consultant to calculate the requirement for the quantity of lightning protection electrodes by the Franklin method, and then install that many electrodes. They will end up being old style.

If you want to get into a philosophical / scientific discussion / dispute, ask the consultant his basis for approving either Erico Dynasphere or Early streamer emission(ESE).

This is not my field of expertise, but the tactics being used by ERICO to get their methods into an IEEE standard against the recommendations of the IEEE experts on lightning makes me very suspicious. If my name is on the project, I'd go with the proven approach.

I should add that I don't really know what the ESE is--it may be a forerunner of the ERICO device and equally suspect. Stick with the proven calculation and electrodes.
