Testing and Improving Earthing in a Running Plant

01/04/2011 4:17 PM

hi there I would like to know the best procedure to follow when testing earthing in a plant that is running,in this plant the main supply is 66kv stepped down `to 11kv for 1 HT motor and 11/3.3 for the other big motors.we also have 400v class motors ,my worry is if a fault occurs when one is testing the earth there is a high probability of being injured. The brief is to test about 30 earthing points and where the values are high you improve .Guys what is the approach here as the plant maintenance period is over and it runs 24 hours ? suggestion highly appreciated

Double the earthing cable connections between the equipment main earth bar and the earthing point, and fit a removable link in each pair of connection. To "test the earth", open the link and measure ohms across the link with a continuity tester. Safety is thereby assured during the test operation.

Surely this is covered in the local electrical code?

Have a look at BS6907 1989 (Mines & Quarries). It describes the method for statuary earth testing.
