VW Diesel and Veg Oil

01/09/2011 6:47 PM

first of all I want to thank everyone for the comments on my set up. I like to pick other people's brains and avoid as many mistakes as possible..I like the comment nothing is free as this is so true but in my case I have 1000 gallons of clean veggie in storage that i have been collecting over the past few years and people are just catching on in my area that this is valuable fuel..My set up is 36 volt...My engine only uses about 1.5 gallons per hour and I generate enough heat to stop my 100000btu furnace with a .75 gallon/hr nozzel from coming on...I like the idea of running a gen head and using a proper battery charger to charge my bat bank. I will post how it works out and also post some pictures. Thanks again to everyone who commented. Very nice of everyone to take the time and type there honest opinions...I am a golf enthusiast and a huge fan of snooker..hopefully I can contribute some useful advice in the future onto your forums.

Somehow you have created a new thread rather than responding to a previously existing thread. (The options include replying to a specific post, replying to a thread at large, or starting a new thread. One must watch the options closely.) A gallon of oil is about 140,000 Btu (depending on the specific oil), so your 0.75 gal/h sounds about right for 100,000 Btu/h.

Snooker, eh? That's not quite as common in the US, but it is a fun game. (You're on, Andy Capp!)

(Korean 4-ball billiards is an interesting variation, too.)

what is your definition of "clean veggie oil"?

the vast majority of difficulty's in this area are deposit related fouling, whether it is a byproduct of the oil combustion, or particulate in the fuel inhibiting filter and flow. Everyone I know who is a WasteVO, or even VirginVO InternalCombustionEngine owner, has mechanical problems on a regular basis. Is this common for other people?

I know people don't believe this, but modern engines need refined fuel.

I agree. I clean mine with a centrafuge,I use old engines, and have lots of spare parts on hand. I also heat my oil to 160 deg f before the injection pump. I have had some filter clogging proplems but for the most part it has been ok..

It seems you have everything, but know how! Go to school and stop begging for advice on simple things that you should know. You just disgust me!

Another rude coward hiding behind the GUEST label.

I'm happy and inspired to read about someone elses successful project and will help if I can. I suspect most CR4 readers feel the same.

Running diesels here in SD for the state what we had to help prevent fuel line geling was a hot coolant unit inline prior to the filters and injectors. This way we kept the fuel warm enough to not gel up on the really cold days.

Basically it looked like a tank heater but ran the fuel thru a coil pipe inside with hose connections to circulate warm coolant thru the unit.

Had very good luck with them.
