Bathroom

01/13/2011 10:45 AM

My wife insists on taking all her electrical equipment and a multi point extension lead to the bathroom. I keep pointing out the water/electricity interaction problems, but apparently it is my fault for not installing lots of plugs in the bathroom.

I thought in the UK power points were not allowed to be installed in the bathroom.

Does anyone have a solution for this minor problem, or should I get life insurance on her and tell her to carry on?

Ground fault circuit interrupters are required in installations near water in the USA.

All modern bathrooms have them here. Don't they have such where you are?

Nope. Until recently the only socket outlet permitted in a bathroom was a double-insulated shaver outlet.

The OP needs BS7671 first!

I think I might swap her extension lead for a better one that I bought for some of my electrical equipment. I will check what sort of protection it has. She doesn't use them while bathing or showering, although I'm not sure she understands the dangers. I will give a lesson she'll not forget and also explain the dangers of water and electricity again!

Two options:

1. Get her some fresh batteries.

2. Get a prescription for Viagra.

If this one is your favorite wife, you should probably do something.

Outlets are not allowed in the bath? How will we get the cast iron tub broken up without power tools? Are there no electric shavers in the UK?

Probably the cheapest alternative would be to get her a small table, chair and mirror set up near an electrical source, and away from the bathroom, no GFI needed.

I got my wife one of these.........it magnifies and lights up. She can pull hairs out of her face that no one else can even see. Keeps them occupied for long stretches at a time.

If she's becoming a nuisance, I would go with the life insurance. Also get her a plug in radio to set on the edge of the tub while bathing.

She's already costed this option up and it will be about GBP5000 and possibly a new house with the correct lighting etc.

I'm not wanting to go down that road.

Power Points are not allowed except shaver sockets (in UK). Unless you use SELV - Safety Extra Low Voltage circuits. Regulation 601-08 applies. But if you have a shower in a room which is not a bathroom, sockets protected by RCCB can be fitted, so long as they are remote from the shower - without going into all the details, around 3 metres. The trouble is that bathrooms and shower rooms can use the entire floor as the drain, or overflow (and you have bare, wet, feet and hands). Showers can spray water well beyond obvious limits. Some Boarding House/Hotel rooms, which have a shower and handbasin crammed-in along with the bed seem to push the regulations beyond breaking point. Limitation of proximity of sockets to sinks and wash-basins, I cannot find in regulations. But it would be unwise to fit them where they can get wet - or where someone could plug-in with their hand in the sink.

I have RCCB protection on every socket circuit in the house. I suggest you do the same.

<...in the UK power points were not allowed to be installed in the bathroom....>

British Standard 7671 reveals all.

Go for the life assurance option.
