Domestic/Commercial Gas Training Centres in the UK

01/14/2011 8:08 AM

Hi all,

I have just completed studies for a Masters Degree in Gas Engineering and would love to train in domestic/commercial gas engineering as well. I'm hoping the additional qualifications will improve my chances of getting a job. The only problem is finding a suitable course provider. The ones i have found have received mostly negative reviews and i'm scared of wasting my money(the courses are quite expensive).

Please does anyone have anyone know a good course provider in the UK who actually delivers? I live in Manchester by the way.

Thanks.

Very funny. How can living in Manchester be an error? I was referring to the repetition in the second paragraph.

Thanks a lot for the link. I have been in touch with some of them and they all claim to be the best. However some discussion forums have revealed some very dissatisfied trainees so i was hoping for some recommendation based on personal experience/ references.

you can do this two ways

first: contact your local technical colleges, some provide the new SAFE gas course, one of them will know which college does provide the latest course.

second: contact a local SAFE registered heating company, they will be able to tell you where to get a course

Thanks a lot for the pointers. It takes years to get qualified through the technical colleges but the private course providers are pretty much faster. I'll work based on your second advice. Thanks again

The SAFE course is about 6 weeks in duration (I am lead to believe), be it from a local technical college or another private provider.

As far as I know most of the SAFE courses in the UK are delivered by technical colleges, however you will have to confirm that youself.

Good luck.. work SAFE!!

just completed studies????????????? you have not completed anything, you may have personally read information about engineering but thats it.

How do I know? you would already have been an engineer to get a bachelor of engineering before studying for a masters degree, and you cannot get a bachelor without on the job working time.

Suffice to say, that point alone is well above an electrician when you use the word engineering as entails design also.

"and you cannot get a bachelor without on the job working time."

Boy, talk about putting the horse before the cart. Many people get their bachelors before working in their profession full time.

Where do you get this idea from?

I think you have your wires crossed my friend, and furthermore, how do you know that the OP hasn't done what he says.

The purpose of CR4 is to aid, help and give free advice to persons based on what they say and it is taken on trust that what they say is true.

first.. are you in the UK, do you ahve a SAFE course under your belt, do you know something about SAFE training that we in this forum don't know?? If so please share, BUT do not vent at someone, just because you may not agree.

The OP has a degree, now he wants the licence to put into practice what he's learnt. In the UK to do that, and to work in the UK Gas industry, he needs to have completed a SAFE training course. It use to be ACOPS, which I did many years ago... and having friends who work for British Gas, they have told me that the SAFE course is getting harder, as safety is becoming tighter. So he's doing the right thing, he knows he needs this additional qualification.

So help the guy... not berate him.. if he's blowing smoke.. then he's the one that is loosing, not us! So be nice

@ Life is......I also wonder where you got your idea from. My first Degree was in Electrical Engineering and i afterwards got admission to study for a Masters Degree in Gas Engineering and Management. Maybe things work differently in your part of the world but here you need to be qualified before going into the industry.
