Anyone Knows About DSC & TGA

Hai all,

Any idea about the below items..

· DSC - Thermal analyzer for XLPE cables

· TGA - Thermal analyzer for XLPE cables

Differential Scanning Calorimetry

Thermogravimetric Analysis

Both tests are used in the analysis of a polymers composition.

Both these tests are used to characterize the physical properties of plastic insulation. DSC (Differential Scanning Calorimetry) is useful for measuring the glass transition temperature of materials. TGA (Thermogravimetric Analysis) measures weight loss with temperature and is useful for characterizing plastic performance. Neither test is normally used to directly identify a plastic formula, but more often as a quality control indicator of physical properties.

TGA use is not limited to plastics. It is commonly used in the ceramic industry to characterize raw materials.

XLPE = cross-linking polyethylene

It might not be abel to use DSC test due to its thermal stabilisation. However, its degree of cross-linking will be effected on DSC data. Comparison DSC and TGA for XLPE, TGA has seem to be more useful than DSC. The TGA data will get to know the minimum temperature of XLPE degradation that is low or high. Suggestion will be used to discuss or design to XLPE formular.

A Google search under DSC XLPE shows many references such as http://ieeexplore.ieee.org/xpl/freeabs_all.jsp?arnumber=378879 I suggest DSC characterization not be dismissed for this application.
