Need to use Windows 98 Software

01/16/2011 12:02 AM

Hi everyone, I need to use some software on a dated piece of manufacturing equipment. Is there any way to emulate or run a DOS based software tool with Windows 7??

Google for a free utility called DOSBOX.

Checkout a software product Called Virtualbox from Sun Microsystems. Load any OS in this virtual world. You will need memory to properly run this software. Also, if you need USB support, pay a few bucks for this feature. If you don't need it, then the free version will work fine. Also, backup your files to a physical hard drive in case something happens to the virtual world. Great program which I have used with open source software.

Just a shot in the dark you need this software to run in real time not windows time- I bought an old sys that had 98 on it(made it dedicated to the machine) You can still get copies of 98 and old hardware- look around-CHEAP! good luck Tim

Right click the .exe file and select Properties. Select the Compatibility tab, check the box and select which version of Windows you want to run in.

You will probably find a working PC with Win98 (SE is better) on it at the junk yard.....

Or it may cost you 10 bucks or so.......get the keyboard and mouse as well if possible.

Win98SE will run well on early Pentiums of up to 500MHZ very well.....maybe even 1 GHZ.

DOS can be run under Win98 or it can be run standalone on a Win98 PC....

(SE version will also run all USB devices)

You can get the OS as a free download all over the internet! I kept mine for such occasions luckily.....

NEVER, EVER TRY GOING ONLINE WITH THIS OS FOR ANY REASON AT ALL!

If you still have a floppy drive, just boot up with a DOS disk. Another option is Linux with Wine (emulates windows software). I like Ubuntu Linux. Puppy Linux can be installed on a CD Rom drive so you don't need to install anything on your hard drive. It does everything including accessing the internet.

I have the same problem. I have an old DOS program that I want to run on my WinXP desktop. I've tried DosBox and it is a great program for running old DOS Games but it will not work with my software because it does not support the printer port and I need both the printer and serial port. So if you need any ports DosBox won't work. I have tired Virtual Box as well but I had the same problem with the ports. Not only that but I had to slow the virtual machine down so much to run my program it was unusable. I have gotten my software to run on a Mac using VMWare but at the time that I tried it, over a year ago, VMWare did not support a DOS printer.

The only solution I was able to come up with was to use an old machine up to PIII under 1 ghz and a KVM switch to switch my keyboard, Monitor and mouse between each machine. Good luck.

Tamu's solution is good for windows7

To use VB, you need to use http://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads version 4 in order to have USB support

this http://forums.virtualbox.org/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=38122&p=171367#p171367 is my journey to get there on ubuntu10.10host with a XP guest. While this may not be of use to the OP, other may find it of use

Than, why didn't you rate it? It seems that I am the only one who appreciated the answer, which is great. There are some little tricks very effective and which are not easily detectable.
