SA 516 Gr 70 Plates

01/24/2011 1:55 AM

Dear Guys,

Hope you are all well..

I want to import SA 516 Gr 70 Plates.. Can some one advise me which size and thickness are more preferable when manufacturing pressure vessels and heat exchangers?

Best regards

Abdul Ghaffar

For pressure vessels, the plate thickness is essentially proportional to pressure times diameter. This gives a wide range of possible plate thicknesses. For modest sizes and pressures, plate thicknesses of 0.25" (~6mm) to 1.00" (25.4mm) would be common. However, if the destination requirements tend to be for larger and higher pressure vessels, the balance would shift toward thicker plates. For this you need to asses the market conditions at the destination.

I once worked in a small to medium scale pressure vessel shop where thicknesses went up only to 0.750" (~19mm). Your requirements (or marketing opportunities) might differ, which I don't know how to predict.

that depends on the size and thickness of you PV and HEX per design calculation. and the availability from mill.

most popular thickness values are 8 - 12 mm

Actually, we use plates of ASME SA 516 Grade 70 with thicknesses range from 6.35 mm up to 32 mm with plate width up to 3 000 mm (depending on the max. width of our rolling machine) and plate length up to 13 000 mm (depending on the max. required outside dia. of vessel). And there are another plates with higher thicknesses, widths and lengths, depending on size of vessel and its design conditions (pressure & temp.), by applying ASME (or any) code rules.

The company i work for produces A516-70 over 3" ,76mm, T. This is in use for pressure vessels. One of the major problems with the thicker plates is the centerline segregration which can open up when the plate is formed due to the shear stresses at the centerline.

I suggest any A516-70 that you order undergo ultrasonic testing to detect this problem.
