Welding a Sloped Pipeline

01/25/2011 12:49 PM

How to prepare the bevel for the butt weld, if the weld joint is at a point of slope (2% or 5%) in the main pipeline. This for a coated carbon steel pipes.

Don't go to that fake link.

Same bevel as usual; 37.5° on each pipe, for a total included angle of 75°.

Is it 2" pipe or 20" pipe? Is the coating rated for 5° slope?

Thanks a lot guys, I'll clarify the exact case I'm facing now: we have an underground 8" carbon steel pipelines, externally coated with FBE (Fusion Epoxy Coating). it's going underground for 3 km, in some points there is a change of slope; from horizontal level to 2% for example, my question is: how to adjust the butt weld bevel to make this slope OR in other words, how can I maintain the slope with the rigid pipes at the points of changing the slope ??

Miter the pipes equally; still beveling at 37.5° off the cutting plane.

I agree with Tornado. Bevel and weld the pipes as usual. Make your slope adjustments elsewhere, away from the weld. If your welds are not uniform, the inspectors will not be happy.

Wouldn't the deflection account for the desired slope?
