Need Help Finding the Right Adhesive

01/27/2011 1:17 AM

Hi to all,

I am Madan from India. Now summer is going to start in India, so am planning to cover my roof with a reflector so that I can keep my home cool and thereby reduce cooling requirements. As a part, I am using a UV stabilized polycarbonate sheet and aluminum foil. I need an advice in picking the right adhesive to stick the foil onto this PC sheet and also the cheap and effective process to avoid formation of air bubbles while sticking.

Thanks a lot in advance for the advices...

I don't have the answer to your question, but highly reflective window films are sold that would work well, and are applied with a spray bottle of soapy water and a squeegee to remove bubbles.

Or you could paint some panels flat white, which is actually more reflective than foil. Make sure paint system is compatible with panel material.

You are right about the white being reflective.

Paint the underside of the corrugated panels (they'll stay cleaner that way) and set them on 2x4's standing up on edge to create an air gap for the breeze to flow through.

Here in the States we use insulation for blocking winter cold and summers heat from our homes. Down in the South West part of the country they have been using foam insulation on top of the roof area that is then covered with a glass bead material to reflect sun light. There are many options for your problem. Lately I have been working with various heat reflecting coatings in water borne and 2 k mixes. They seem to have some great results when doing heat gains on various substrates. Keeping temperature rise to under 50 deg's in most cases.

My only point to you is there maybe a better way to solve your heating issue, given the new materials out there. But of course I am not sure what maybe out there where you live.

Good Luck

Using PC sheet covered with foil seems a waste of money.

Something like this:Rigid Foam ,or the spray on stuff is a better way to go. But, I know nothing about construction practices in India.

any simple film will soon be covered by soot and dirt. You might need to wash it weekly?

What you need is a vented air gap.

This is panels of waterproof material, sheet steel or corrugated fiber glass. Underneath you have a 6 inch air gap with 4 inches of foam beneath it. In effect a roof with an ait gap and foam insulation.

You will be better off with a blue or green fibre reinforced sheet roofing raised above the roof level. The space below can even be used if the roof is high enough. I am sure you would have seen a lot of these in various cities in India.

The airspace below this roof keeps the heat away from the actual roof surface.

GA

You beat me to it!!

The roof needs to slope to allow the hot air to "pour out" upwards easily and suck in cool air at the lower points.....

Flat roofs need a black (so that the sun heats it and the column of air in it!) "chimney" to suck the air out, maybe more than one.....

A PC sheet material, even one with UV inhibitors compounded into the resin, isn't a very good choice for an installation such as this...especially in India. PC sheeting will crack / craze from UV exposure. Airborne pollutants / acid rain will only accelerate this. Installing this in a horizontal orientation, taking on the full daily exposure from the Sun, will accelerate this physical failure exponentially. Most common (external signage) applications where PC sheeting is used would describe the "expected like" of the installation of 1 1/2 - 2 years in "South Florida" exposure conditions if "vertically" exposed.

If you must use a plastic sheet...the "very best" material (from a UV Resistance / Chemical Resistance perspective...) would be something produced from a DuPont Teflon or Tedlar film. UV stable and impervious to heat / chemical degradation. Not cheap, though!

Second best would be a cast vinyl film. Calendared vinyl is "good" but cast is more suitable..again, cast is more expensive that calendared.

You could also set up some post frames and erect a series of "sun shades"...vinyl-coated fabrics, grommeted / gusseted and stretched with rope / lashing to maintain their tension. These could periodically be rolled up / retracted when you wanted to benefit from the sunlight...or if there is extreme weather / high winds threatening. Ongoing maintenance would likely include periodic repair / replacement of both the vinyl-coated fabric and of the tensioning lines.

As previous posters hve said any 'plastic' will degrade over time. The cheaper the product the shorter the time. Also there are wind loading factors to consider, so the roofing ( make no mistake you are building a roof ) will need to be built to the standards for your area.

One other thing i can tell you is that any material that lets through light also lets through heat. The implication here is that the roof is better if it is opaque, traficable ( for convenience in construction ) and strong enough to take wind and rain loads.

Guess what? we're talking corrugated iron with a colour bonded finish in white spaced a short distance above your existing roof.

OR a sail or two. If you choose to use a sail you must remember that they are used to propel boats and have an incredible ability to exert a lot of force on their mounting points. They typically have a life span of about 6 - 8 yrs. longer if you take them down in the periods when they are not needed ( of course ). This would be winter here in OZ but i'm not sure you have a winter in your part of India.

These are placed in the garden to provide shade for recreational areas but i have also done them over a portion of the house to provide cooling.

Good infos in a good post.

Some buildings that I have seen have "sails" and they seem to last far longer than that, so a careful choice of supplier might bring a longer life......

Buildings that I have seen with long lasting sails/fabric roofs:-

Denver airport (DIA) (the new one, though its not that new anymore!) 15 years old?

Friedberg, Germany, (where Elvis did his national service! Before the Town Hall was built!!) Town hall, Over 29 years and counting......couldn't find a Picture sorry.

Olympic stadium built for the 1972 Olympics near to Munich. You get some good views of the covering in the intro video, it still looks like new:-

I think that the problems of rot and discoloration from UV etc., "CAN" be a thing of the past if enough care is taken in the choice.....

We have several commercial buildings here in Western Australia that use that material. They are called Tensile Membrane Structures. They are an engineered solution that costs a lot. The "fabric" is drawn down on threaded rods a bit at a time. The people doing this walk around the entire structure several times during initial setting and then again as the seasons do their thing.

For the ones in the photos i use specialy made shade cloth that lets the wind through to minimise the load. It is a knitted cloth so that it won't tear if a small hole is put in it. It also comes in different densities with different shade factors and colours. I get them made by sail makers as they understand the way to cut them so that the edges are not floppy, if they are tensioned correctly!

3M and Locktite are some of the best suppliers of adhesives.

You could also experiment with simple contact cement. It takes timing and skill to make it work, but it is cheap.

I have successfully glued aluminum L-bar to PC using acrylic glue, but you have to be quick and it helps if the aluminum is at least room temperature. How long it holds remains to be seen.
