Problems in Switchyard Charging

01/27/2011 11:31 PM

Dear all,

I am interested in knowing what are the emergencies conditions/ problems will be arising at the time of charging/commissioning of a 400KV switchyard(one and half circuit breaker scheme).

This is definately not my field, but congratulations to you for recognising the need to ask for advice and being prepared to do so.

My thoughts are following

  • You are dealing with dangerous voltages. Consult with the designers, manufacturers and also with those who have commissioned similar instalations in your region.
  • Make sure everything is "dry". (Heard of a high voltage switchroom where condensation on bricks allowed tracking of the arc with disasterous ourcome.) The equipment has not been energised for some time and so there could be vapour/water in the most unlikely places, like inside transformer coils.
  • Make sure that everyone involved is trained/experienced in HV work.
  • Choose the right weather. (Meaning don't try this when there is a thunderstorm anywhere along the transmission line.)

Be careful!

Then read the commissioning report for that particular switchyard. It cannot be seen from here!

I think gentlemen we have another Meare in our midst, building a power station in his dreams. Have a look through previous posts.
At least this time it's coal fired and not a "Mega large high head hydro power plant".
