Ford Diesel Motor Question

I have a 1990 Ford w/ 7.3L IDI motor. It has not been started for at least one year. With new batteries, 5 gal of fuel, I blead the air from the system. Have good fuel flow up to the injector pump, but even after loosining and much bleeding of the fuel lines at each injector, there is very little fuel flow and hardly any pressure here.

What are your thoughts as to what could be wrong?

Sorry to ask but, just to be sure, please confirm that you are familiar with bleeding procedure. 2) is it really fuel that you are bleeding ? 3) Was it is always diesel fuel in the tank before the truck was put in storage ?

I am surprised that it would even need bleeding unless it was run dry...

Almost forgot and also just to be sure - From my limited experience with smaller diesel engines, injected volume per injector is typically very small and pressure will only manifest itself if the line to the injectors is barely cracked open. Should this be your first time, what you are observing could be perfectly normal.

Have you checked the fuel filter(s)?

Over the one year period, your fuel most likely disintegrated into it's component parts, one of which is pariffin, which is basically candlewax. This wax is now blocking your injector points, which are very tiny.

That is my guess. I don't know how you would clean them out. I would advise you to avoid using any kind of fire, but perhaps a little bit of heat, from say a 500 watt fan blown space heater might do the trick. I'd leave it aimed at the injectors for 24 hours, and see if the fuel flow is there.

Not a diesel mechanic. Just throwing a guess out there.

Have you confirmed that the fuel pump is running? There may be more than one, check for both (all?)!!

Empty fuel out and put a gallon of fresh in.....

Check or replace all filters and check if there is also one in the tank.....

Is it Automatic or manual - neutral safety switch?

The neutral safety switch activates (or not) a solenoid in the diesel injector pump, do you have free flowing diesel to the injector pump?

I would expect to see an electrical connector on the pump for probably 12 volts, check for the 12 volts.....

If you honestly believe that there is nothing wrong except no fuel, substitute.

Get a small rag, and pour some gasoline on it. Then wring it out. Hold it above the air inlet, and try the starter. It should start and run for just a few seconds before all the gas fumes are sucked out of the rag.

WARNING. DO NOT LET THE RAG GET SUCKED OUT OF YOUR HAND. ALSO, have a charged garden hose close at hand with a fine mist setting.

2 to three rounds with the gasoline rag should purge the air out of the lines. These models had a glow plug system that was a little touchy. If the "wait to start" light goes out too fast, it is a sign that there are some glow plugs have failed. These engines are hard to start with cold glow plugs. Good luck.
