Abrasive Resistent Materials

02/05/2011 1:38 PM

I hope there is someone who give me direction on pipe materials that are abrasive resistant for places like gravel pit. We are changing the plate steel to a brinnel 500 plate. But I have no real Idea, as to what to change the pipe system to.

Although the initial cost is high, thick wall transfer hose is very abrasion resistant and can be used for bends, as this is where the most rapid wear is seen.

we've had good luck using ceramic coatings in high abrasive situations. is an old time tested remedy. nickle alloys may be another solution. it's common pratice to use nickle arc welding to hard plate bulldozer blades, front loader buckets, etc., with excellent results.

You could also use a tube made of "Nimonel", this is a high nickel content tube that is perfect where abrasion is a risk!

I recommend you look at other abrasive situations such as sandblaster nozzles. Sandblasting machines that I use generally use rubber or plastic for low velocity feeder hose and ceramic or tungsten carbide nozzles where the velocity is high.

Ultra High Molecular Weight High Density Polyethylene is used to line chutes used for loading iron ore, one of the most abrasive of materials. If the operating temperature is not hight this can be used. Bioramani

There are many good solutions: ceramic coating.

But very likely only one that is very good in abrasion resistance and affordable: cast basaltic rock. See: http://www.kalenborn.de/englisch/englisch.htm

US and CANADA are served by http://www.abresist.com/

Kalenborn invented the process of melting natural basaltic rock, casting similar to metal casting and cooling slowly to inhibit crack formation.

If the available sizes are too thick for your intended use then try hard anodised (100µm thickness) aluminum (6061 is good but others may be too).

If this is not sufficient then flame spraying of carbides will do the job.

Fiberglass piping with 40% Silicon Carbide in the liner might be a solution.
