O/H Crane Temporary Derating

02/06/2011 10:49 PM

We have a O/H crane by SWL 12.5 ton that maximum lifting weight at normal operation is 3 ton . I like change the swl to 3 ton as temporary for easy static and dynamic load testing because the area for load test at swl 12.5 ton is not safe . So can we change SWL to original if we need by load testig as 1.25 * 12.5 ton for a while?

The area not being safe for 12.5T does not make the crane itself unsafe for 12.5T. If the crane were unsafe for 12.5T, then there would be a report in the General Register from the Engineer/Surveyor from the insurance company providing crane failure indemnity insurance cover that would state the maximum load to be applied to the crane. The safe working load will be determined at the periodic inspections.

Why is the originally-posted course of action being considered at all? Why not just cover it with a temporary Procedure until the area is safe for 12.5T again?

I do not understand why you changed the swl from 12.5 ton to 3 ton, and what makes it unsafe. The swl is determined by a ratio 2:1, 3:1 etc. and that is determined by the weakest link in your operation. If the swl is 12.5 ton under normal conditions, you need to see what the swl of all aspects of the operation i.e. the connection supporting the crane. If it is connected to an object that has a swl of 1 ton then the swl is 1 ton minus the weight of the crane.

thank for reply I means that the max tonnage rating crane changed to 3 ton for reduce weight of periodic load test (load test ratio of swl is 1.1 and 1.25 swl). the volume of 13.75 or 15.6 ton sinker(cargo load ) is very big and the area for testing in not enough .so by reducing the swl we can reduce weight of sinker .

For 3 t load handling you can add an aux hoist, and get the crane certified for the same.

In case you handle 12 t load again your crane has to be certified.
