Model Train

02/06/2011 7:01 PM

Good Morning All. First off, let me say, that, I think I know, but at the end, I don't have a clue.

I am building a largish 7 1/4" gauge model tram, electric driven on two, 6 wheel bogies.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BgjmIJp6h0w this is a clip of the beasty that has got me excited. The tram is shown at about the middle of the clip.

I have space in the axle box,to fit springs, 45mm x 20mm, by 20mm thick. Travel allowable is 20mm maximum, max diameter 20mm. Oh, using coil springs..?..!

The approx weight of the tram, all up with passengers, will be around 800kg max.

Q1.How many springs should I use in each axle box section...?

There being 12 spaces, max spring diameter 20mm. In each space, Should I use say 1 x 20mm rated at 66kg each, or 2 x 20mm springs, rated 33kg max load each.,or 8 x 8mm springs rated 8.5kg, presuming solid length, maximum deflection, free length ect are taken into account.

Q2.Is the difference worth the effort...?

Q3. Am I asking the right question...?

Q4. Do you need more info...?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Mark N.

"6 wheel bogies"?

Do you mean like any of these?

Yep, pretty well right. 3 axles in/on one pair of side frames( Bogie) set. There are 2 springs in or on each axle box in your photo.

I have a 350w pm motor driving each of the two outside axles, so a total of 4 motors

Is there a reason why 2 and not 1, or any other combination of springs.....?

As per one of my questions, does this different quantity have any effect at all, or am I just getting excited....?

I think less is easier, at least., and possibly the way to go.....!

Been looking at "Century Springs", NSW, but will check the other Aussie manufacturers, and Yes, closed and ground ends for sure. The Century PDF catalogue is quite good actually, helped me a lot.

Thanks again Fellas. Mark N.

A single spring for the load would require a larger wire diameter, possibly a larger coil dia, to achieve the spring rate {per Tornado's comments}, and more turns.

This means a single spring may have more height; and possibly a larger dia than will bed in the width of the box.

If you look at the real ones - the same dual spring approach applies for the same reasons.

But check through the catteldogs Just an Engineer put you onto. Look for loads and rates for single compared to pairs - as not all springs are created equal.

I.e. wire material, processing and section can change a lot about a spring.

I'm still not sure why you want to go 3 axles per, not two. Have you considered curves and points?

A source of springs that may suit this is valve springs off larger engines.

I would regard them a 'better QC'd than the Century Stock Cat stuff, which is more the hardware quality than their industrial to spec grade. I.e. Listen to JAE on sourcing.

Re: Sexual Tension

Isn't it amazing, the more you read, the more you learn. The height or space that I have for deflection is quite restrictive., and will have more effect on all the criteria I throw at it....... Have just thought that, it is not "that"which I want, but "that" which I can readily get, that will answer the Question.

I am using 6 wheel bogies, axle loading and because I acquired the side frames, lazer cut in 20mm steel., included in with another part of a big deal.

The centre wheels will be "circumcised", no Flanges. (Running on a 60' radius Min)

It looks like 2 springs, will be the answer, although I have now thought, "why not have a spring inside another..............

Nope, keep it simple, 2 springs, and do it. Will get a quote request of to Gibbens.

BTW. Have you blokes read a book, "Not much of an Engineer" Stanley Hooker at Rolls Royce, autobiography. A real Lad, young Stanley, smart bastard, also. Bloody good read.

Cheers Fellas.

HD HANGER INSTALLATION: Install hangers with gap on underside as shown. This allows the isolators to operate efficiently. The gaps also compensate for minor misalignment. Direct contact of the unit and hanger box "short circuits" the isolation.

It's all in the springs, of course! Spring in one's step, hope springs eternal, those two were spring-loaded, etc.

When you have decided which springs you want, you might like to contact either "Gibbens" or "Australian" springs. These are two manufacturers and they both stock part batches of springs across multiple coild diameters and material gauge and rate.

Both are in Aus and will be able to help you determine 3 of coild, wire gauge, hardness, and whether the ends are ground, flat or open. (I suspect that in your applicaiton you would want "closed ends, ground" so you have a flat load bearing surface at both ends.

Are you thinking of going in competition with QR National? Passenger service around the city?

Re: Model Train

800kg ÷ 12 springs ≈ 67kg/spring. As a rough guess, I would think of compressing each spring about 40% of the available distance between full extension and full compression, thereby leaving room for further compression when going over bumps. If the free length is 45mm and closed length is 20mm, you would then want 67 kg/10mm, or 6.7kg/mm, as your spring constant. My spring info and sources are in Imperial units, so I don't know off-hand whether you will be looking for round-wire vs flat-wire (die) springs. For authenticity, I'm thinking of one spring per pocket, but am unsure. (But don't go for a whole bunch of narrow springs.)

Your pix jog some nice memories of a ride I once took on a rural 12-inch gauge line using 3/8 x 1-1/4" flat bar rails set into slotted 2x2 ties. Go for it, Casey!

Re: Model Train

philosophunculist, philosophaster,

1. A person who pretends to know more about something than he actually knows as a way of impressing or manipulating others.

2. Someone who claims to be a philosopher, but who actually has only superficial knowledge of the subject.

3. A pseudo-philosopher.

Philosophaster is a Latin satirical comedy by Robert Burton. Since the play is about someone who pretends to be a philosopher, the term itself has been used in more recent times to refer to a pretender to knowledge about philosophy.

Found on http://www.wordinfo.info/words/index/inf

A. the OP's statement frankly admits limited knowledge = Antithesis of ...

B. meaning; definition of Guest; a rhetoricaster

A poor rhetorician (someone who expresses language poorly in an attempt to persuade or to influence others).

C. additionally; a criticaster and logicaster

Tornado briefly mentioned die springs. On reading your post these little beauties were my first thought. They are strong and have more travel due to the flat wire. They also come left and right wound so that you can fit one inside another.

Individual springs are expensive. I buy long continuous springs and cut them to the desired length. Go to http://www.mcmaster.com ; they have a good explanation of springs and spring rates.

I think you have it. I am getting ridiculous prices on the springs I want, all coming back as "Special Manufacture".

The ends will finish up not being closed, but ground will be close enough.

Well done. Thank You All

You should not forget the valve springs as mentioned by 34point5. These are also often in concentric counter wound pairs and around the weight you seek.

Apart from my normal CR4 username "Tornado" I have some alternate personas that I occasionally use. One of them is "Editor Crankshaft," whom I bring into play for comments on grammar, composition, word usage, and the like. Rarer is Eugen I (Patriarch of the West), which I use for philosophical and other "magisterial pronouncements," such as scolding flaky "philosophers," pseudoscientific pretenders, and various religious figures. I'm really bad about this, but I try to be humorous.

I read here long time, know "Editor Crankshaft," you. Still not understand "Eugen I (Patriarch of the West)" unless mean Pope?

You not Pope. I wrong, apologise if so.

I not wrong then, you have humorous flaky "philosophers," pseudo-scientific pretenders magisterial pronouncements problem with Musashi quote my signature? yes?

Why?

Miyamoto Musashi. Was most revered monk and treasured artist before end of path.

(apologise. spell checker say must hyphenate "pseudo-scientific", I change, no offense intended)

I liked your quote from Musashi, but nevertheless wanted to present a complementary view. The nickname "Eugen I" was not styled after any pope, unless accidentally. My given name is Eugene, which I altered a bit. By coincidence it also matches Eugen Herrigel (Zen and the Art of Archery).
