Water Treatment Plant

02/07/2011 2:04 AM

I don't know whether this is the right place to post this question? I'm working in thermal power plant. Now i have been allotted for water treatment plant package. I know every package is valuable. But my friends told me that this is not a mechanical engineer work. Its mainly for chemical engineers. Is it true? Please guide about the scope of water treatment plant package for a mechanical engineers... thanks.

That depends. If the treatment process is chemical in nature and involves periodic chemical testing, then it might fall to chemical engineering. If it is reverse osmosis, then it is primarily about maintaining filters and pumps, which is largely mechanical. Either way, it will be good for you to master the process, thereby increasing your value to the operation.

Water Treatment Plant, is a good place to work in and you will be more marketable if you had gain experience. I'm also with WTP. In my plant I supply cooling water, produce soft water and D.I. water. In my point of view its a mechanical engineer job cause the whole system consist of tanks, pipings, pumps, valves, and instrumentations (such as flow meter, pressure sensors, analyzers, etc). And more over chemicals are used as dosing agent. Its a good field stick to it.

Keep learning what all come through your responsibilities and indulge whole heartedly, just to see yourself a man of all round experience, a value more than a mere mechanical engineer.

Oh yeah, there's lots of mechanical equipment in water treatment: pumps, valves, air compressors, mixers, pipework .... Don't worry, you'll find yourself very busy.

The Chemical engineering thing there is a chicken stuff, its only about the frequent water quality testing of the treated water. For a thermal power plant, a good quality of treated water to be used as a cooling medium of could Internal Combustion.E or External.C.E or condenser coils is a must. A bad water quality is bad to heat exchange. This will cause scales and all the other undesirable attribute to heat transfers between conducting coils and medium.
