Law written in stone

08/02/2005 7:10 PM

It looks like the original hardliner's laws will finally be revealed. The original stone tablets with the laws of Athens written by the infamous Draco, as in Draconian, are finally able to be read.
Note: You must be really bad to have your name remembered after 5,000 years.

Draconian Code

The Draconian Code dates back to 641 (621 ?) b.C. 5,000 years seem too much. In any case, these laws were very harsh, not "bad"

He did not draft the laws; they were in effect long before him. I probably did overstate the age though, they said a few hundred generations. He was actually just a scribe from what I've seen.
As for bad laws vs. harsh laws, I consider any law where the punishment doesn't match the crime to be a bad law. Of course that might just be a cultural difference.

It's a simple semantic arguement but I have to disagree with your assessment of bad vs. harsh laws. Bad laws would be laws that are not grounded in legal precident or simply make no sense; such as this law that is still on the books in NY State:

"A person may not walk around on Sundays with an ice cream cone in his/her pocket."

A harsh law would be one where the punishment is worse than the crime. Something beyond Hammurabi's "Eye for an Eye" code - i.e., cutting off someone's hand for stealing bread to feed his family.

Personally, that "No shirt, no shoes, no service" law really ticks me off! Double Draconian, to be sure.

If it the law was "No shirt, no shoes, violators will be hung by thier toes" it would be Draconian.
