Gas Tightness & Air Tightness Test

02/07/2011 10:28 PM

hi, while i'm reading a commissioning manual for 210MW boiler, i have come across with gas tightness & air tightness test. But it hasn't provide the sufficient details about where it has to done. I guess it might be in main steam pipe line. Is it right or else please provide sufficient detail. Please give what is the difference between these two tests.

Contact the publishers of the commissioning manual directly.

Steam lines are tested hydraulically with water as per code. Gas tightness or air tightness test are tested on boiler & duct side with smoke bomp to ensure that there is no leakages in Boiler wall throgh fins.

Must be for the air and flue gas path......... Anyway, consult the boiler manufacturer.

gas tightness test

It should only and exclusively refer to the tests necessary to prove the integrity and strength of the gas supply pipe to the boiler and not to the boiler flueways, economiser flueways or steam pipe. The context in the manual should have told you this.

If you don't know what it means you are not competent to carry out the test. Get a certified gas engineer in to do the test otherwise you insurance people should have a fit.

air tightness test

This may refer to almost anything including economisers, flueways external to the boiler or if it is a water tube boiler to the combustion chamber etc. Again the context in the manual should help in deciding what is being referred to.

Gasman

The gas and air tightness is on the fire side, not the steam lines.

But be extremely careful, since this should be done by the manufacturer of the equipment else you could lose the warranties.

Also to perform the air or gas tightness test you need specialized equipment which is cheaper if you get the manufacturer to do the test with their own equipment, plus you have the benefit of getting re certified and warrantied
