Solar Panels

02/08/2011 6:25 PM

I have been experimenting and building solar panels and am looking for a material to encapsulate my cells to the back of glass. I have not found a material which can stand up to heat generated form the cells as well as the sun, especially in the summer heat. I want it to be clear so as not to hinder the sunlight to the cells. Does anyone have any information as to what or where I can buy such a material? I know that there is a clear membrane material that can be heated with a common heat gun, but I can't find a seller of the product. It must remain clear for full sunlight to each cell. Can anyone give me advise as to where I can get this product? Phone number?

Thanks Rick

The most common encapsulant is polyurethane.

When I worked at BP Solar, that's what we used in the panels. Essentially the panel was evacuated with a vacuum pump. Then urethane was injected into the void.

Panels were good for 20 years or so.

Or how about sandwiching it between a second piece of glass?

I suggest that you try one of the following Di-electric encapsulating products:

1). Dow-Corning I-2620, a 1-part low VOC conformal encapsulating product.

2). Dow-Corning Sylgard 184, a 2-part encapsulating product.

There's also a Dow-Corning Silicone sealant that's need to seal the front and rear panels to the surrounding frame...I can't remember the product name at this time....works great (adhesion bonding and temp characteristics) on aluminum frames, glass and and all sorts of plastics)

You can buy these products on Ebay (cheaply) or directly from Dow-Corning, or you use to be able to do so!

I've build several DIY solar PV panels and had great success with both products. The are other, but they're hard to come by unless you're a PV manufacturer....larger quantities, more expensive, and generally sold only directly to the PV manufacturers.

If you have never built a solar PV panel before you must be aware of several pitfalls that can happen to you while building them.

If you can drop a note into my CR4 Forum email box and provide your private email Addie I can send you a very good and through "how to" PDF that shows you step-by-step instructions of how to properly build your panels, large or small or in-between. This guide simplifies the build and takes out the "magic" connotations.

Please let me know if you want it, okay? Word of warning.....promise not to share it with anyone online or elsewhere, because it is Copyright material that I personally bought. I don't want to be op[en to a lawsuit to the Author's attorneys/

Have a great sunny day!
