2005 Ford Escape V/6 Premature Engine Start Orv2

02/18/2011 7:14 AM

Starter engages when ignition is turned to the 'On' mode. (The engine starts with less effort than if the key had been turned to the 'START'mode.)? is - what is the cause- what is the fix. New ignition switch or look elsewhere ????

My money's on the ignition switch. Since it's starting the engine from a position from which it shouldn't be, it almost has to be there.

I've replaced them on older vehicles and that's not a lot of fun. Now with airbags, etc. packed in the steering wheel, I wouldn't know where to start. You definitely don't want an airbag exploding in your face.

if no changes has been done in electrical wiring through the near past , you have to change ignition switch

You might need to remove the covering under the steering column in order to see the ign switch assy. On those models it is usually mounted on the lower steering column in the area where the brake pedal is located. It is indexed with a rod that is moved when you turn the ign lock assy. You might only need to reposition the switch so the start contacts are further down from where they presently are.

Begs the question is the starter engaged all the time ?

sounds like a short between the main brown wire and the solenoid red/white wire.

Remove the battery cable from the starter, so you can test without burning up the starter. Use a test light instead.

It sounds like the ignition switch, but the switch may just be out of adjustment. Pick up an inexpensive shop manual, and read how to align the switch. If that does not solve the issue, you will need to replace the ignition switch. Good luck.
