Distrubuted Control Systems (DCS)

02/19/2011 2:25 AM

our sugar plant is planning to go DCS and one of the proponet is the Fisher Provox DCS which has the ff. criteria: Operator Server=DEC VAX4000/90, Terminal Server=XP-400, Operating System=VMS 6.0, configuration Software=ENVOX 4.0, Database=Sybase. Anybody can share information or feedback on this equipment for our thorough evaluation, since I believe that Provox is a mid 1980's technology. please rate the performance of this equipment compare to the latest, the pros and the cons, etc...

thanks and much appreciated

Have you talked to any DCS vendors?

yes, but they are not familiar with this Provox and another reason is for me to have a backgrounder on this DCS from those who in one way or the other have encountered or familiar with. other DCS vendors promote thier product, understandably discouraging endusers from using or buying competitive products.

So, do I understand you correctly that you are thinking to put an old, used DCS in place?

I'm sorry, but I have had no experience with this one.

Things to consider:

  1. Is this DCS still functioning properly?
  2. Does it have the functionality for your application?

I wish you success!

Fisher PROVOX and open VMS DCS systems are considered legacy technologies meaning they are no longer supported. The software is not compatible with new operating systems and hardware is no longer manufactured. What is the control system you are currently using? If you are looking to upgrade the controls you should talk to an independent systems integrator. They do not manufacture anything so in theory, they will recommend the best solution for you. I work for an integrator named RoviSys. We will do our best to answer your questions if you can give us more background

Fisher Provox is an older DCS/PLC system, but it has been tried with great success in Oil and Gas installations all over the world.

I believe newer versions are available.

To use an older DCS will mean you are buying that units quirks and issues. Talk to the old user before doing anything else.

Valski...

You will NEVER get the "enlightenment" you seek with posts like this. No man or woman in this forum knows your application, and the specific requirements you seek to achieve.

It is hard to say this, but sometimes you really do need to bring in the vendors and ask them for their help. They are the subject matter experts, and you have the right and priviledge to bring in as many as you want until you find the right solution.

THEN... once you have been educated, feel free to post here and let us help you validate your selection.

Until then, bring on the vendors.
