Repair of Backup Rolls by Resleeving

04/03/2007 10:37 AM

Backup Rolls are used in Big Steel Rolling mills and are really costly. One Backup Roll costs upto $100,000. They are at present in short supply. I think we can reuse the Rolls with damaged barrels by machining the barrel diameter , grinding it to great tolerances and then fitting a new sleeve with same I.D.as O.D. of the Barrel. O.D. of the sleeve will definitely be the original O.D. of the Roll Barrel. Fitting will be done by shrunk fitting. I suggest using Sleeve of ASTM 52100 or X75 alloys. I suggest using of Centrifugal Cast Sleeves. Requests for sound practical advice . Jay Sureka

Could you re-surface the roll by flame spraying then grind back to the original size?

We used to refinish rolls by grinding them, then having them chrome plated and reground to their original size. I am not sure if we did this with backup rolls or just the work rolls.

chrome plating can cause spalling if the roll body material is too soft. The body will flex, but the chrome is so hard that it will just crack, then chunk off the roll. we had issues with that.

#2 #3 #4 #5 Please note:

The Scale is --shall we say - DIFFERENT!

He is talking of Diameter 70", working barrel length 60", Weight of ONE roll= 20Tons

Must be for 4-Hi Strip Mill--not for a plate Mill

I may have worked on such a roll, The Barrel was for 80" max. strip was centrifugal cast and a curved profile was machined depending on what roll # it is, The mat'l was H11 for temps of 1800° F in a hydrogen environment. Are they Bridle rolls? If you nee assistance ,I can direct you to a company that does this kind work.

I wont say it's impossible, but shrink fitting at that scale would be a challenge.

Hi: what you suggest to do was done in a flat mill plant in Argentina many years ago. The team who do that also published a paper. If you want more details please let me know.

Regards

Hi Mukulmahant: the paper was found. I asked for it to the Organization who deals with the publication. Now I asked if it is in electronical format. The cost is about $ 36.- (argentina money), that means aprox. U$S 12.-

My mail is gabriel.dasso@gmail.com , so I think we can continue the conversation directly, if you agree.

Regards,

Gabriel

Hello,

Can anyone tell me the chemical analysis or base metal of backup rolls? I need it in order to find the wire to recharge the backup rolls. My email is roland.scheyvaerts@soudokay.be

Best regards
