Generating Voltage

How do people select Generating voltage level of a generator in Offshore Oil and gas Platform if the total platform is being supplied from that generator.......

what do you mean ?

the main power at offshore is generator, the voltage selected according to most common tools use on platform

The generating voltages may be 6.6 kv, 11 kv..... on what basis they select this voltage level..
