316SS Ti in Thermowells for Sulphur Plant

02/21/2011 9:18 PM

My customer is asking me for thermowells made of 316 SS Ti for Sulphur Plant, the conditions are Pressure 4.1 kgf/cm2g , Temperature 260/350 degrees (500-662 F), however it is dificult to find this material, I need to know if it is possible to recommend just 316 SS for this apllication , this is for TiO2 bed. Thanks.

It looks as though the addition of Ti improves both the temperature performance and corrosion resistance, which sounds like the ticket for this app. Thermowells would probably be machined out of bar stock, if 316SS-Ti is made in that form.

The application as I understand is for the Catalyst bed in the Convertor of the Sulphur plant. SS 316 / 316L is normally used in most plants.

Hi , this is interesting for me as I would like to know also the installation of the instrument in the catalyst bed. I would be grateful if you have more in depth info for my information.

I recently had this question asked. 316Ti is better at higher temperatures than 316L - in my situation the question as to replace 316L with 316Ti. Given the temperatures involved it would not make any difference which material you choose for this application.

I would suggest that you contact someone like the BSSA (British Stainless Steel Association http://www.bssa.org.uk/) or whichever association is in your area. If you give them all the details then they will be able to assist you - that would be much better than getting advice from unknown sources in the internet.

In some instances you could use a 316 SS with a ceramic outer layer, it is not the same and you would have to analyze the real life expectancy of the material when in use.
