Carbon fiber rebar cocnrete reinforcement

Hello People, I am currently doing my final project and I decided to write about using carbon fiber rebar as a cocnrete reinforcement. the intention is to compare the results to steel rebar and see which gives the best results.

I know carbon fiber doesnt rust and has good compressive strength.

Does anyone know the limitations of using carbon fiber, operating temperature range, hazards?

has any one done a similar kind or project? If so, how did you go about it?

Any advise or tips on websites or articles would be much appreciated!

I think you are breaking new ground here. There probably won't be much data on graphite rebar. You will have the enviable chance to produce new data , never before seen, for others to copy. I'm not sure about the compressive strength either. Will it be hollow or solid?

My advice to you would be to do a cost comparison analysis first. You may decide to change topics after that.

When I read your post and came to "... and has good compressive strength.", I had to check it out. I found a little bit at my good friend Wiki:

"When used as a replacement for steel, CFRP (Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer) bars could be used to reinforce concrete structures, however the applications are not common.

"CFRP could be used as prestressing materials due to their high strength. The advantages of CFRP over steel as a prestressing material, namely its light weight and corrosion resistance, should enable the material to be used for niche applications such as in offshore environments. However, there are practical difficulties in anchorage of carbon fiber strands and applications of this are rare."

I believe lynlynch is correct; the expense will far outweigh the advantages in all but the most demanding or mission specific applications.

thank you once again. I do know its corrosion resistant. What im wanting to know is what sort of corrosion can it withstand and the operating temperatures are it can be used for.

I thought it was more cost effective than using steel rebar in the long term?

Ok, if we're going to do this we need to come to terms with some terms.

There's more to a carbon fiber composite than carbon. Solid carbon isn't much use for anything but pencil "lead". That's an oversimplification, but................

Carbon fiber composites are what you will be dealing with. So, first you'll need to understand composites. Usually carbon fibers are held in place, and given their strength, by the resin used to bind the fibers together. This is mostly epoxy, but other thermosetting resins can be used also.

The binder is what limits the temperature resistance of the matrix. It's safe to say that carbon fiber composites (CFC) can withstand any temperature that the concrete will, so that's not an issue.

Chemical resistance is another story and you'll need to do your own research there.

Moisture absorption will be the biggest hurdle to overcome, study that too.

I don't know if carbon fiber rebar can be easily deformed (ripples/ridges) for good shear grip within the concrete. It might work as a post-tensioning member, though.

I think the 'grip' issue is the big question. I know a lot of R&D went into glass fiber reinforced concrete, to obtain a material with grip and compatible with the concrete chemistry. GFRC is brilliant for slabs, but I'm not sure if it's yet used in columns or 'trusted' for cantilevers.

Resin bonded 'rebar', I think will just be resin lubricated bar anyway.

Bit like roof panel anchors in tunnels
