SPA Bus REF-541 Relay

02/25/2011 11:32 AM

We have a loop ABB spa network of REF-541 feeder protection relays. I wanted to take out one of the relays in the loop to send it to repair. When I took out the relay from the loop, the whole loop network failed. I got a special jumper to close the Rx and Tx connections in the loop, it did not solve the problem. I got a spare relay and configured the SPA address and the baudrate as the same as to the defective relay, still the communication in the entire loop failed. But when I put back the old relay it works. any idea how do I take out the relay without affecting the loop.

Thanks,

There should be no reason of not working if you are replacing with the identical product, few thing you can do is

1 check the relay outside before fixing it in.

2 see if relay is operating after fixing in. may be you can hear that toggle sound or check the coil current.or check the voltage and currents on terminals.

don't get anything else rifght now in mind.

I hope you are using CAP 505 for the upload/download the relay setting and configuration. Then Upload all the setting/data from relay. - Dowload the same in new relay. Sometime communication to relay with software become problematic or tricky. You need to make sure about software version. - SPA network card which is connected back of relay and having FO or ethernet communication should be possible to remove without disturbance to the network. - Pls. check in the MICROSCADA connected network. may be it is configured in such a way that with watchdog monitorning error, stop network also. - PLs. take care that any modification in relay configuration of setting in the relay will required soft restart or power up restart to get unable new settings. Better to remove tripping signal and interlock to downward breakers.

Thank you, based on your reply I am sure you have a good knowledge about the ABB network. I am new for the SPA protocol.

1. I did not use CAP 505, just I configured the new relay for communication parameter only. I did not download the whole program to the new relay.

2. The relay communication uses RER 103 for loop fiber to RS-485. you mentioned FO card, what is that. Also could you explain the MICROSCADA network, is it the same as SPA network

Thank you, appreciate your help

Hey the reason I did not download and upload the program using CAP 505, as the old rely is M for multi and the spare relay I got is C for control. \both relays are REF-541. The M (multi) has more functionality than the C (control). I tried to use the spare one just by configuring only the SPA addrese and baud rate. just for temporary place occupier to keep the SPA network going for the other relays, but did not work.

Thank you, appreciate your help
