All I know is put force on inner ring if you fixing it on a shaft and force it on external Ring if you fixing on a bore.same applies for removal.

I prefer to shrink bearings on, heat them to 175C in an oven and then just slip them on to the shaft. Removal is brute force with pullers unfortunately.

There are tricks to getting bearing off but it would take a full chapter to go through them.

If you believe manufacturer's recommendations, anti-friction bearings should not be heated above 110°C for shrink fitting. And bearings which are designed for service temperatures more then 125°C, are not to be shrink fitted normally.

1. Hydraulic press and common sense.

2. Heat and cold.

3. Big, big hammer.

Animal!

Brute force you can't beat it.
Have had to resort to a 400ton press on a few occasions.

When I was a kid, back on the farm, all we had was a hammer.

One trick I was shown by an ex mine fitter. I'd got Pickavant pullers wound up to the max. he came along with a welder and just struck an arc on a bit of the inner race. The localised heat broke the bearing free.
