Laser Welding of Stainless Steel

03/09/2011 1:16 AM

Hello all

We have pulsed Nd:YAG laser system having frequency range up to 100Hz, Pulse width from 0.2ms to 20ms, average power 350W and Pulse energy 80J. The focus lens having focal length of 75mm. Please guide the following:

1- What are the best parameters to weld stainless steel having thickness 1mm?

2- Can we convert the welding system to cutting system by changing the nozzle to 1mm diameter?

Good news! There is one answer to both your questions. To weld any metal, you want to use wider pulses. The wider the pulse, the deeper the weld penetration. To cut the metal, you don't want to melt, you want to vaporize, so use short, high power pulses.
