Using Two DC Inverters to Power 220V Pump

03/09/2011 9:16 AM

Can I use two 12V DC to 120V AC (3000W) inverters, to power a 200V AC water Pump?

How would I wire them? I'm assuming I'd connect both AC grounds but would like some advise before I try this!

It is not advisable to do so with out frequency synchronisation, which I think is an expensive affair, BTW one 3000 watt inverter is more than enough to run a 200VA pump, So why to wire 2 of them in any configuration?

I need 220V to run the pump and each inverter supplies only 110V. This would only be used on an emergency, temporary short term basis.

Sorry I misread 200V AC as 200VA, And I Guess you are talking of making them in series, But again frequency has to be synchronised to do so, otherwise you may not get constant output voltage on timescale,

Yeah, what Rakesh said. If the phase of the two 120V sources aren't in the proper phase arrangement, the voltage either won't add up to enough (200V) or will be over power. And the inverters probably don't care about drift, so it would change from moment to moment.

I am not sure about your wattage, but you may run something like this from an inverter: http://www.quick220.com/220_catalog.htm

That 120 to 220 converter will do the job with just one of my 3000W inverters...thanks for the pointer!

I set up a system to do just that. I kept having power outages in my area and got tired of having no water while it was out.

There are inverters that can be paired to give you 220 vac. I used two from Xantrex. Both inverters run from the same battery bank. On the output each has a neutral and a hot terminal. There is a small cable to sync the two together and once connected the two neutrals can be connected together and the hots are 220. It is an elegant system, but rather pricey.

I looked at a step up transformer with a single 120 vac inverter and decided to go with the paired system instead.

Thanks - I'll look into that system as well.

The best solution and cheapest, is to NOT use the inverters. The cost of the Inverters is MORE than the cost of a new DC pump, so you will save cost immediately, if you buy a DC pump instead of an Inverter.

DC pumps are far more efficient than standard AC pumps and can be used at variable speeds, saving energy. They can also run directly from solar batteries, using far less solar panels, saving even more money if you have a solar power system.

This is a deep well pump...very expensive to remove and replace! This is an emergency solution, not a permanent one. If and when the pump fails at some point in the future, I do plan to replace it with a DC pump. Thanks for the suggestion.
