Welding Applicable/Recommended For Sizes of Pipe

03/09/2011 9:56 PM

Hello everyone! I'd like to know your advice regarding welding of pipes. Is there any code or standard stating that welding is best preferably applicable at pipe size 50mmΦ up. Pipe sizes lower than that threaded connection is mostly advised.

What could be the explanation for such. Id really like to know.

Threads up to 50 mm (2 inches) are economical to cut in the field, either with manual or powered dies. Larger sizes are awkward, and harder to tighten up well.

In carbon steel pressure piping, even smaller pipes are mostly welded, these days usually with socket-weld fittings. In earlier days, oxy-acetylene butt-weld fittings were the most common choice.

Thanks. I was working with fuel oil piping for Gensets, most of our pipes used were size 50mm dia., and our subcontractor was using threaded type of fittings. I kinda thought, why not go with the welded fitting set up, since our pipes are seamless, it would be very practical also to have the fittings just welded than that of the threaded type. Otherwise, we should have not bought seamless pipes in the first place.

What you think about that? What could be the best preference?(threaded or welded connection)

Fuel oil piping is not usually high pressure, and with proper joint compounds can be sealed successfully. However, welding would typically give better mechanical strength. Socket-weld fittings are a bit slower to make than threaded, but not by very much, so they are still fairly economical. Unless there are some code provisions or project specifications that were overlooked, I would tend to leave the piping as is, maybe watching more closely for any leaks. For future work, I agree that welding is preferable.

In my location, double-containment piping is now used for fuels. This might not be required in your jurisdiction. The outer pipe is often some kind of plastic (I forget which). The joints are socket type with embedded wire heating coils that fusion-weld the joints--pretty slick. One brand name is "Fu-seal" [unsure of exact spelling].
