Boiler Operation Under Highly Fluctuating Loads

03/14/2011 3:11 AM

here I have a situation, The rated capacity of a fire tube boiler is 12 TPH. The main consumer of steam are more then 20 batch machines. Due to cycles of cooling and heating. The steam generation load varies from 3 TPH to 10 TPH. This affects the efficiency of boiler. how this can be managed? Any idea for solving the problem like accumulator, Good burner turn down etc.

I don't know much about these things, but it would make it easier to help if you told us what the fuel is - coal, oil, gas?

Cheers........Codey

Burner is dual fuel rotary cup for Natural Gas and Furnace Oil combustion.

What issues is the efficiency concern actually causing?

Mr. Situation....

As I understand your dilemma, you have a 12 TPH boiler that can meet maximum system demand 10 TPH, but cannot meet minimum demand 3 TPH. Is that correct ?

Having a 12 TPH boiler that could meet 3 TPH minimum means that the boiler has a 4:1 turndown..... 4:1 is at the limits for a modern boiler, and you probably have a 30 - 40 year old antique, left over from the last Brittish invasion of your country

Having two boilers available for service would be a good solution for your problem. One should be 12 TPH.....the other should be approximately 6 TPH

Please heve the courtesy to complete this thread and tell us all of your final decision

Sir, It is not as older as you are thinking. I have checked combustion at 20% and 85% of MCR not very much difference. But I am concerned about the system inherent losses like radiation and convection due to surface. The percentage of these losses increases as boiler loading is reduced. Also the auxiliaries attached to boiler like FD fan have part load efficiency issues.

DEAR Anonymous Poster,

You could have described the steam consumption pattern more. Whether the condensate is returning to the boiler, if so at what temperature.

The only way is to smoothen out the consumption pattern, in such away the generation of steam is in the range of 7.5 Tonnes/Hr. to 11 Tonnes /Hr. and re-heat the condensate.
