As far as i know...

1. Thermal overload relays based on (a) thermostatic bimetals and (b) eutectic solder (US usage, now obsolete i expect)

2. Magnetic overload relays, with the inverse time characteristic being provided by viscous damping by oil in a dashpot

3. Electronic relays, with many levels of sophistication, from simple analog to microprocessor-based ones.

4. A special type, thermistor relays, are used to protect equipment, mainly motors, against excess heat. Not current dependent.

How each works is rather complex, and will take considerable time and effort ... not easy in this forum.

Hope this helps.
