How Do I Choose the Pressure Regulating Valve?

03/15/2011 4:58 AM

Hi everyone,

The is a question regarding the PRV. The thing is that the Design Institute has developed a design for a 20km plastic water pipeline with diam. 165 on design pressure 0,8-1 MPa , conected to the existing line 4,57 MPa. In the beginning it was expected to have 20,8 cub.m/h, but decision was changed to 6,8 cub.m/h with perspective to encrease that consuption further. right near the tie-in point were designed to manholes, fist one has a ball valve and flow meter, second one has a ball valve with PRV. On the end point we have a RC reservour 1000 M3 collecting this water for water injection to the wells. The problem is that the more than half of the pipeline is alinged already but valves are still didn't. HOw to choose the PRV according the latest requerements (with what throughput) and there is also an idea to move the flow meter from tie-in point near to station, do you think is right?

Try rephrasing your question, it's impossible to follow.

The water supply for the water pump station is accepted with a technical water. Desing consumption is 20.8 m3/h. Designed pipe (0.8-1.0 MPa) shall be conected to the existing pipe 4.57 MPa, There two manholes in tie-in point, the first from tie-in point has high pressure valve and the pressure regulating valve to reduce the water pressure in design pipe, next one has flow meter and a low-pressure valve after it. The design pipe is plastic- 165mm diameter, estimated to carry on 0.8-1.0 MPa already ordered and and almost 11 km from 20 requered alined (underground), but valves, meter and PRV is not yet, actually PRV is not ordered yet. Suddenly decission was changed for 6.8 m3/h for pump station. So, how to calculate and than by the proper size of PRV under 6.8 m3/h consumption for station but using this bloody 165mm plastic pipe, because the valve manufacture suggested to us to use PN25 valve but it is imposible to connect it to our size pipe.

If anything, this rephrasing is even harder to understand.

Plastic pipe for 1.0 MPa?

I give, it's still nonsense.

OP, do you have any facility for posting a graphic representation of this process in order to make it more understandable?

The pressure regulating valve must be able to pass the desired flow without the downstream pressure exceeding the maximum design pressure of the line to which it is connected.

If it cannot, then one of two things will happen. Either:

  • The downstream pipe will be starved of flow, or
  • The downstream pipe will burst

and a third thing will happen:

  • Someone will get very cross.
