Hot Fuel Pipe of DG Close to 4,1 kV Cable Power

03/18/2011 5:36 AM

Hi,

I'm in the middle with customer. In DG installation, I notice that fuel line of DG is close to 4.1 kV of power cable. It's hot fuel in the pipe, so we are going to cover the pipe with flexible hose with flame retardant. The flexible hose is usually use on hydrolic application, can handle till 200 degree C and 100 psi. But I need your opinion regarding this one...

DG is 1600 kVA, 4,1 kV

Need your advise

What is the temperature of the cable at this point? Depending on the type of cable you may get away with shielding it. but to be honest one or the other needs moving.

Check the cable temperature and also the fuel pipe temperature. What is the gap between two, if sufficiant gap available, then only covering the pipe with flexible hose may work. If possible provide some shield. To solve the matter permanently, shift and route the cable with any other way.

Thank you for respond. According to DG reference, full load temp of fuel could be reach 60 DegC, but I dont know for cable temperature, could be assume 32 degC. Is there any reference explain that this in future will be problem, electrical induction may be ? this pipe is between 2 line of cable power 4.1 kV. and very close

You have not mention the distance between fuel pipe and the 4.1KV cable. Also, if cable temperature rise assumption is only 32 degree, which is room temperature. Then there could be no problem in future. At mentioned temperature, there is no problem of induction in future.

I assume your fuel pipe is metal - if so there is no problem unless there is a fuel leak.

If there is a fuel leak then any covering you install will:

1. hide the problem

2. reduce the air gap to the 4.1kV cable.

Presumably the 4.1kV cable is also insulated appropriately for its voltage use.

If so I see no problem with the current arrangement, and in fact, your suggestions could make it dangerous.

I think that the OP has a different question than is being answered. Reading between the lines (pun intended) I think he may be asking asking if the close proximity of the cables to the fuel line is causing any type of inductive heating in the metallic fuel line. If that's the case then the answer is that it depends upon on a number of factors including but not limited to the pipe material, how closely spaced everything is, whether the 4kV cables are single phase or three phase, how long the parallel run is, etc. If each cable is a leg of a three phase system, if the third leg is distant from but parallel to the two in close proximity to the pipe, and the run is long, there could be could be an inductive heating problem. Best solution is to get the fuel line rerouted away from the 4kV cables.

You are correct, his question is unclear.

I assumed that he was concerned about sparks and fuel, whereas he may be concerned about heat affecting the power cable.

Your suggestion of re-routing the either the fuel line or the power cable covers both.

If this is not possible and heat is the issue a thermal barrier between the two would be preferable since it then allows inspection of and access to both the fuel line and the power cable.
