Why DG designed for 0.8 PF?

03/18/2011 10:01 AM

Hi,

I need technical clarification in usage of Diesel generator. Why all the generators are designed 0.8 PF?

Kindly clarify.

Bala

yenbala; poor power factor overheats the generator .8 is factory tested for temperature rise on the windings. perry

Dear yenbala,

In A.C Power system unity P.F for motor/drive may not be possible since the system needs the Inductance Effect.

At the same time Low Power Factor means higher Line Current, for the same load and resulting in more Heating takes place in the winding which is detrimental to the motor. Hence a balance is struck at 0.8 P.F.

If you desire you can have 0.95 P.F also.
