I would like to run a laptop, 26" TV,small Pa system for promotional work would a 800 watt generator run this or would i need more how does one calculate how much power is needed to run the 3 items
These items should have wattages (or VA = volt-amps) on their nameplates and/or in their manuals. You should have some reserve so that louder sounds are not distorted, so if your total wattage is around 700 or less, the 800w generator should be good.

Maximum power is usually on the items rating plate (usually found near where the chord goes in) If it says ##A and ###V - not ##W - then multiply A and V together, as that equals Watts.
Unless the PA is a clunker or huge and the TV is a plasma - I'd guess typical stuff at about 65W each. So say 130W
So you wouldn't have a 'power problem' with 800W
BUT: you may well have interference problems and voltage irregularity problems with a conventional small generator, on such a light and variable load [both TV and PA vary dramatically].
I'd recommend you use a small inverter generator - Particularly if the TV is running off a computer? (add 100 -150W) or DVD player (add 40 W) - as life will be a whole lot easier with Inverter tech.
Your load is probably not an issue, as I don't think Inverter Generators come in less than 1000W
This is slightly off-topic, but before buying the generator, make sure the sound it makes as it runs isn't too loud or distracting for your audience. Some run quieter than others, I think.
