Septic Tank Pumps, Which Ones Are Good?

03/28/2011 8:43 AM

I have spent a long night looking over reviews for a reliable septic tank waste water submersible pump.

Anyone care to chime in here with some suggestions?

I need;

  • 4 feet of lift from water level to field line piping
  • 3 > 5 amps
  • completely submersible
  • I just want to pull off the excess, treated water...NOT all the poop
  • float switch * This seems to be a sticking point with most as they say some types become coroded and stay stuck open or shut*
  • medium use as it is a really small system ... once a day operation if that
  • needs to pass some small debris...no solids ...
  • 120v

Price is NOT the issue. I am looking for a small to midsized pump, low amps and just enough kick to empty a few gallons of water a day.

The commercial reviews are all over the place from Wayne , to Zoeller, to Little Giant.

I have no clue.....diaphram float switch, pvc float switch, pig tail...etc.

So.....does anyone have some real world experience with this. We have never used one and have relied on gravity feed......... but times are changing as are the local codes.

check back in after lunch. Thank everyone as usual.

PS

.....and NO! this is not what i wanted a barrel for...thats for the shop.

This is off the point, but I thought I'd ask. Re:

So gravity overflow is no longer allowed, at least in some jurisdictions.

I was going to ask why, but seeing that you're down in Louisiana, I can imagine it might have something to do with trying to minimize overflow of really raw sewage in flood conditions.

I'm not sure how effective that will really be (I mean, I assume the idea is to maintain some headspace so overflow on flooding is not immediate, but you can't maintain enough headspace to contain a flood).

Any insights?

(Part of the reason for asking the question is just that now we're mandating energy consumption for something that used to not require it.)

I don't know much about those pumps, but I do have a suggestion.

I have a submersible pump that's been working for years without problems and is able to move water and small debris. It's the bilge pump in the back of my boat.

Magnetic pumps should do a good job for this, these pumps are available in smaller sizes,

Beside above there are a small synchronous pumps used in modern days washing machines, you can have a look on that.these pumps are designed for no leakage for many years,

Instead of float switch I Think pressure switches used in washing machines should do a good job as they don't get any direct contact with water .you can fix this switch on top of vertically standing tube in tank.

Don't know if this will apply to your specific application but this is my "real world experience".

I use a Wayne 1/2 HP Macerator Pump in my ejector pit. The ejector pit serves the lower level toilet, sink, and slop sink which all eject to the septic system.

I installed one of these in the fall of 2004. No problems so far (knock on wood).

I have two floats, one which is the factory hi/on and low/off. The second is a chemical resistant high/high which I installed and fashioned to never be submerged unless the primary hi/low fails.

The second float over-rides the primary float in the event of failure, activates an audible alarm and sends me a text message through my security system.

I would strongly recommend a Hydromatic submersible wastewater pump. I've been specifying them for years and years for septic system large and small.

Make sure you choose a submersible explosion proof grinder pump. Hydromatic's product line features a whole host of Total Dynamic Head and flow rates.

www.hydromatic.com

You can also choose a Goulds Pumps , now a Division of ITT, submersible wastewater pump. Again, choose a submersible explosion proof grinder pump.

www.goulds.com

Both companies are the Gold Standard and industry leaders. More importantly, both companies have outstanding tech support and stand by their pumps.....very good warranties too.

I've never had any major problems with either company's pumps, whether they were water or wastewater pumps.
