Pressure to Torque Using a Centrifugal Pump to Drive Additional Pumps for Work

04/03/2011 3:14 PM

I have seen a statement posted in a product comment that a man hooked up his 2 HP magnetic drive pool pump and then used it to drive 3 additional pumps in series that are each running an electric generator head. The posting details are just that vague and I am trying to prove/disprove the possibility but I have no knowledge of the engineering of centrifugal pumps.

He says that he is driving the three additional pumps at 3400 RPM's with water pressure alone and that each of them is turning a Harbor Freight 10KW generator head.

Of note is that HF says that you should use a 16 HP gas engine to drive them each. I reckon that the torque of the gas engine is around 21.5 ft/lbs!

My hypothesis is that he is pulling everyone's leg but can someone do the math here to show what it would really take in a pump to equate? Thanks.

Why would anyone use a mag drive pump to pump pool water? They are not very efficient and expensive.

And to drive 3 10Kw generators, with no losses, you'd need about 50 HP.

This guy is out of his mind!

An important point is the load on the 10 KW generator--if there is no, or a very light load, there is a low mechanical load as well--just enough to overcome friction and rotational inertia...

Put a 10 kw load on the generator and see what happens (say one hundred 100 watt bulbs (and see how bright they light)).

Unless you too are a complete fool, you already know this is impossible if the generators are loaded. No wonder you posted anonymously.
