POWER ESTIMATION

04/05/2011 11:21 AM

In estimating the appropriate power of the generator or solar to be used in a house, do you use the output/input power values of your equipment

Input of your equipment.

Size your generator/solar array at 125% of the anticipated load.

Gave up worrying about it, turn it on and you've got to pay for it somehow.

"Appropriate" suggests many things. Most people size a generator (used for emergency power) to power the "essential" equipment in their house. This may not include power to operate a clothes dryer, AC unit, etc. When sizing for solar panels, if a grid tie system is employed, most people would size the system for the average use. Spare power goes back to the grid or the electric bill is greatly reduced. Either way input power to appliances is used in the calc.

I agree with WJMFIRE, however, you have to take into consideration your local utility regulations as you do not want to cause any power quality problems. Some utilities only allow up to 85% of peak load consumption, others only allow light load compensation. In the end, make sure you comply with their requirements or you might become a isolated customer as utility would prefer to cut you off before letting you damage the voltage profile.
