Line following using optical sensors is quite common (and probably the simplest to program and implement), obstacle avoidance using a sensor (optical, tactile, ultrasonic, etc) is also common but requires more programming to allow the robot to navigate in a simplistic fashion).

GPS (should) still be able to be used indoors, but the resolution is going to be more of a problem due to the smaller area. With some software calibration (to assist in increasing the accuracy of the GPS) and additional basic software and sensors for obstacle avoidance it still may be possible to use. Possibly more trouble than it is worth.

I'd guess there is a variety of optical/infrared or acoustic sensors that could be used.
