How Do I Harness The Energy Generated From Speed Breakers

04/06/2011 8:52 AM

I am an undergraduate student of the University of Lagos,Nigeria. I am doing my project on Generation of Electricity from Speed breakers. My challenge is in harnessing the energy converted from the mechanical state, which is to be converted to electrical energy.

I hope to hear from you soon. Thanks

There is hardly enough energy available to require 'Harnessing'.

I think you might have to do some study on the rack and pinion system, see how energy generation through this can fit into the concept of a car driving over the speed breaker. I hope I do understand the question and provided you some guiding path. I stand to be corrected, I'm so ready to learn too. All the best.

Your best bet would be with hydraulics and a speed breaker like the sleeping policeman used in England. Either the entire hump could be on the hydraulic pump or just the flat top. The problem is to design one that works smoothly.

The hydraulic pump could pressurize a set of accumulators that when full could run a small generator while discharging.

The inherent problem with this concept is you are getting your energy from the internal combustion engine of the vehicles driving over. This might be recovering some waste energy but will probably result in a net loss overall that is paid for by vehicle drivers fuel bill.

If you wish to pander to greenies, by all means pursue this mostly ridiculous concept. (Though there are some rare circumstances in which it could be useful.)

But if you can do arithmetic, you will soon see that this is career suicide among other people who can do arithmetic, such as real engineers.

I am not so sure, with the right application this sort of concept could have validity. I had considered this some time ago as a gate opening device in locations where a solar gate opener is not feasible. I wouldn't go with electric, but instead use hydraulic or mechanical means to open the gate.

~Anon~, that would have to be a pretty small gate.

How would you close such a gate? Do you have to go through it again? More speed breakers? What if the vehicle is a moped?

The application I was considering it for was a large vehicle gate. I have also considered this for a garage door opener in my next house (mostly for fun since energy savings would be so small...would be great to make a rube golberg type system)

I would probably use a spring to close it but set it so foot traffic wouldn't have to overcome the spring to open and close it. JohnDG has some good thoughts too.

That's not a bad idea - a 'sleeping policeman' of some sort on the approach to the gate. Drive up a few inches onto the bump - wait 'til the mechanism does its thing and the gate opens, drive through, then (if there's not enough stored energy left over) use a second bump to close it. (The closing energy could be stored by the gate itself, if it had e.g. rising butt hinges, so the exit bump would just have to trigger the release to close it).

Need something able to distinguish the direction.

If not enough energy stored from previous cars, bikers would have to dismount and do it handraulically .
